Tax Aid for Students - Beat the PAYE System and claim a P45/P60 refund

Student tax - is it fair? No, it's not and you can beat it! The tax that students pay is called PAYE (pay-as-you-earn). This system is designed for full-time, full-year employees, so it doesn't work fine with students. In fact almost every student pays too much tax! What you should do is claim your tax back. The most popular reasons for a tax overpayment are: part time work, holiday/seasonal work, agency work, more than 1 job. Practically any change in employment status means you should think of a tax refund.

Emergency tax - Can I beat the Tax Code? Yes you can! This is not as scary as it looks - you simply pay tax at 22% without a tax-free allowance. This "emergency tax" is usually indicated by a "BR" Tax Code on your payslip/P45/P60. Such code is used if your employer is not sure how much tax you should pay: Codes are issued by HMRC but they often don't have the necessary information about a student's income.

Exemption from tax - is it possible? Yes, but quite rarely. There is only one exemption for students under PAYE - only available to low-income summer jobs through the P38(s).

Claiming a Student refund can be done by completing a few tax forms and sending them to the tax office. NOTE: you must have the P45/P60 vouchers from your employer(s). To ensure you get the maximum possible refund, we recommend that you use professional help.
